The Adoration of the Magi

Late 1480s

Gerard David

This illumination is from the Breviary of Isabella of Castile (Add. MS 18851, f. 41). Gerard David, like most painters of his time, worked on panel paintings, illuminations, and just about everything else that could be painted, incluing polychroming sculptures.

So far we’ve mostly seen the Virgin adoring Christ, so I thought it would be interesting to bring in the Magi for a change. The Adoration of the Magi was a very popular scene at the time, possibly becuase it showed the rich in a favourable light.
